CAMBRIGE — The Dorchester County Council met Jan, 17, with Council President George L. “Lenny” Pfeffer Jr. presiding. After reviewing the motions and actions from the closed session, there were a couple of notable announcements with last affect to county residents.
Interim County Manager Jeff Powell announced long time county Human Resources head Becky Dennis is retiring after more than 20 years of county service. Powell was effusive in thanking Dennis for her service and quipped it would likely take three people to replace her when she retires in March. The county currently employs nearly 600 people, both full and part-time.
Powell also highlighted the promotion of Donna Lane to chief of staff. Lane has served the council in a number of roles over the years, including interim county manager, so she is well qualified to serve in this position, he said. said the promotion was well deserved, and it would free up some of his time to address other items pertinent to county business.
Pfeffer recognized Vice President Mike Detmer to read and present a proclamation. Detmer took the podium to read aloud the document signed by all of the council members. The proclamation detailed the intent of Dorchester County to recognize and promote January as Mentoring Month in conjunction with the national efforts to encourage people to serve as mentors to the nation’s youth (more information available at mentoring.org). The proclamation shines a light on the effects the recent pandemic has had in exacerbating the need for the county’s youth to have sources of support and mentorship.
Tyler Phillips of Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Eastern Shore accepted the proclamation from Detmer and commented on the continued need for mentors in the county as well as the entire Eastern Shore in order to provide resources to underserved youth. He echoed the county’s commitment to bolstering the mentor community and urged residents to get involved in the larger effort.
Wrapping up other county business, Lane and Pfeffer spotlighted the vacancies on the Police Accountability Board. This board is part of a statewide effort at the county level resulting from the Maryland Police Accountability Act of 2021 — Police Discipline and Law Enforcement Programs and Procedures.
Pfeffer said that there were a number of names currently on the list for consideration, but that the vacancies were in dire need of being filled.
Lane added that there were compliance obligations under the bill that needed to be met and that the appointee(s) would work with county staff as well as Dorchester County Sheriff James W. Phillips Jr. to provide required documentation. Further discussion was tabled for future council meetings.
